The Coral
Castle is a stone structure that was created by a Latvian named Edward
Leedskalnin. It is located north of the city of Homestead, Florida. The
structure is comprised of numerous. mostly limestone stones formed from coral.
Each stone weighs several tons. It currently serves as a most curious and
interesting tourist attraction. Coral Castle is noted for the legends
surrounding its creation that claim it was built single-handedly by Leedskalnin.
How? Perhaps by using reverse magnetism. Or could it have been done by
supernatural abilities that allowed him to move and carve numerous stones
weighing many tons. One story has him having the stones being delivered in the
afternoon by a truck. The driver was then sent away and supposedly in the
morning, the stones would all be off the truck, some already placed in position
by only Leedskalnin. Did he have a genius for a leverage and weight theory that
he could have really done that all by himself? Leedskalnin supposedly built the
castle over the course of 28 years in response to being jilted by a girlfriend
long in his past. He joked that the only uncomfortable piece of furniture was a
chair made for his mother-in-law. Even after taking a direct hit from Hurricane
Andrew, a category 5 storm, the stones never moved. I have been in Homestead
several times and regret never making the visit. Well, perhaps someday soon.
