it was the oddest thing
riding on train cross-country
lunch with his wife
she was the one who noticed
attractive woman
staring at her husband
“do you know her?” she asked
he said no
it made for an awkward lunch
later in the club car once again
while having a drink
mysterious woman enters
again curiously, she stared at him
never speaking to him, but just looking
sipping a glass of wine elegant in her hand
finally, she walked over to her
in a russian accent she asked what his name was
he said it was Alex, “As in Alexander, yes?
he acknowledged it and she nodded, “Do you remember St. Petersburg?”
“We were lovers in a previous life generations ago”
like she was looking into his soul
somehow she knew, now he knew too
she left the car, never to return
never to be seen again
