It’s been said (by Dr. Wolf
von Frankenstein) that nothing in nature is terrifying when one understands it…after
living through a tornado and several direct hit hurricanes, I don’t know if I
agree with the good doctor…fortunately, the tornado missed my house by ½ mile,
but after going out and seeing the devastation the next day…and reading about
the fatalities…I imagine it was terrifying…hurricanes can be frightening too
with the wind blowing so hard, you are sure a tree is going to topple over on
your house, or that the windows are going to blow out…thankfully that has never
happened…I think most people had a pretty good understanding of these natural
‘monsters’ and yet they were terrified…on the other hand, I have never felt
scared of lightning although there were times I should have been (like trying
to finish a round of golf in an impending storm)…as far as earthquakes go, I
have only been through a couple of minor tremors…never lived by a volcano…and
things seem to be only getting worse…three major hurricanes in the gulf and
Atlantic at the same time…never happened before…the increasing temperature of
the planet and melting of the ice cap is scary…but that is not so much nature
as it is man at the wheel.
