On board a ship, all
"stairs" are called ladders, except for actual staircases that are
aboard passenger ships. Most ladders on a ship are narrow and nearly vertical.
You can’t get to the top of a ladder in one step. No, you’ve got to have
patience. You’ve got to have the belief that you can get there. It’s one step
at a time slowly but surely. And it’s also true that some ladders in life are
more worthwhile to climb than others. Some don’t lead anywhere. Each step a man
takes is built upon the one he just took. The ladders of the Dao will not lead
you astray.
