It's
better to know how to knot and not use it then to need to knot in a hurry and
not know how. That’s what an old sailor told me years ago. Forget the trivial
for it’s better to learn the essential and those things that might someday save
your hide. There is always the unexpected and we should be prepared for it.
There are things that I learned years ago that I thought useless to learn at
the time, but now the time has come in when such things have proven handy on
many occasion.
