While alive, the body is flexible and soft. When dead, rigor mortis sets in and the body is stiff and hard. All living things share the characteristic that they are soft and pliant when they are alive. When dead, they become brittle and easily broken. That which is acceptable to change can bend and not break. Those that cannot change become broken.
