Jim Courtright

Jim Courtright was a lawman turned outlaw…he wore his hair long and had a reputation for flair…while working as a Marshal, he organized a protection racket that shook down money from business owners for ‘protection’…anyone who crossed him risked their lives and businesses…several business owners were murdered when they didn’t cooperate…he moved from Texas and tried to start protection agencies elsewhere, but eventually landed back in Ft. Worth…one business owner who refused was named Luke Short….he ran a bar called the White Elephant…Courtright accosted Short out in the street and Short shot him dead…Courtright was 38 years old…Short was tried for the killing but claimed self-defense and was acquitted.
